Partha Sengupta is a Calcutta-based Indian documentary photographer and emerging filmmaker, born to a refugee family. He holds a postgraduate degree in finance and an MBA. Shifted from a financial career in 2012 to photography full-time, he worked in a newspaper for three years, with his first assignment on the Sundarbans region on the post-Aila effect. Oslo University supported him with a short grant, and Trafficked Women was his first assignment for an NGO. During the Counter Foto Mentorship Program in Bangladesh, he began exploring work on the post-colonial identity and linguistic issues of the Bengali refugees—The Bloodiest Border, a finalist for Burn Magazine’s Emerging Photographer Award and the Documentary Project Award. There, he assisted international media outlets with their assignments in Bangladesh. Sons of Soil (supported by the Serendipity Arts Foundation), and nominated for the World Press 6X6 Global Talent Program. His works have been exhibited at Dhaka, Goa, Kozhikode, New Delhi, Berlin, New York, Montreal, and Cambodia (Angkor Photo Festival), and finalist in the Chennai Photo Biennale. He participated in the VII Amplified Students' Voices and works published at Burn Magazine, PIX Magazine, the Polis Project, BBC (UK), and Netra News Sweden. With a full scholarship, he studied Documentary Photography and Visual Journalism at the ICP, New York, and was a contributor to the book The Gaze of X-Ray—A Book on Torture and Why the Caged Birds Sing – a refugee story on Matuas by Boston University. He is a member of Aviral Ganga, a Delhi-based environmental think tank. He has a special interest in anthropology and rescues stray animals for medical treatment.
